Reserve Firefighters
Santa Paula Fire Department has one of the most well-developed and comprehensive Reserve Firefighter programs in Southern California. Our city relies heavily on Reserve Firefigthers, and is committed to the coninued growth and development of our Reserve program.
Our Reserve Firefighters are given an un-paralleled opportunity to gain valuable Firefighting and EMS experience. As the primary engine company firefighters, our reserves are entrusted with providing Fire, Rescue and EMS services in our community. Our Reserves also participate in regular training and professional development to stay current with their skills and knowledge.
Career Opportunities
Becoming a Reserve Firefigher with Santa Paula Fire Department is a great way to develop a career in the fire service. We are one of the only agencies in Southern California where reserves are the primary firefighters on our engine companies. Reserves get the chance to gain experience, training, and collect a small monthly stipend.
During the last few years, over 50 of our Reserve Firefighters have been hired as a full-time firefighter with other agencies. Here's a small sample of where some of our reserves have been hired:

Requirements
Firefighting is a challenging profession that requires dedication, compassion, and a commitment to serving the members of our community. Our department is currently accepting applications for committed, hard-working individuals with the following minimum training:
- Emergency Medical Technician & CPR (
Required) - Current CPAT Certifiation (
Required) - Firefighter 1 Academy (STRONGLY Recommended)
Other Desired Training
- A.S. Degree in Fire Science
- Fire Explorer or other fire experience
- Paramedic Certification
Reserve Firefighter Responsibilies
Reserve Firefighters are required to work a minimum of three, 24 hour shifts per month. In addition to responding to emergencies, our Reserve Firefighters also perform daily station maintenance, assist with community education programs, assist with business inspections, conduct regular training and much more. Santa Paula Fire's reserve program gives members the experience of living and working in an active fire-station. Application Process and Probationary Period
Applications are always being accepted. Hiring of Reserve Firefighters takes place three to four times per year and applications on-file will be reviewed at that time. Applicants who meet the minimum requirements will be invited to appear for an oral-panel interview. Those applicants who are selected from the oral panel will undergo a background investigation and medical screening, and if passed will be given an offer letter.
Prior to the first shift, Reserves will attend a short mini-academy, to review basic training in Fire, EMS, and Rescue. Upon completion, Probationary Reserves can sign up for 24-hour shifts as a Probationary Reserve Firefighter and serve as the 4th-person on the engine company. The probationay period will last for a minimum of 9-shifts (or approximately 3-months), during which the Probationary Reserve must successfully complete a required list of drills and complete a final comprehensive manipulatve examination.
After 1-year of service, Reserve Firefighers are awarded with a California State Fire Marshall Firefighter 1 Certification, and "pinned" at a badge ceremony with the Santa Paula City Council.
